At the age of 40, I’ve played a lot of games over the years, so I’m narrowing things down here to the ones that truly shaped me.
These are games I loved, or that affected me deeply in some way. I figured it would be better than including ever Zelda game for example. I am a massive Legend of Zelda fan and have enjoyed most games in the series, but only 2 of the games really impacted me.
I also collect otome games, so I’ve included a shrine to one of my favourite genres.
I've broken it down into different sections, and just know it kills me to use the word "Retro" to describe my childhood games lol.
You may notice that after a point I don't really play 3D games anymore. As the graphics of video games have improved, my health has declined. Many of the more modern day games, like Balders Gate 3 or the Breath of the Wild make me hugely motion sick. So I am unable to play them. Which is soul crushing as a gamer. Thankfully, I don't lack other things to play, but it does hurt knowing I can't move forward with people to the future of gaming.
You also may notice that I am primarily a Nintendo gamer, but I skipped the Wii and Wii U entirely. While I had the Wii and the Wii U, I found that motion controls didn't mesh well with my disability. So many of the games were frustrating for me. I'm looking at you Skyward Sword!
These days I only play on Handheld, whether that be my Switch, Steamdeck or my Andriod Phone.
I leave all the PS5 and Xbox Series S gaming to my husband.
