Welcome to my Video Games section.
At the age of 39, I’ve played a lot of games over the years, so I’m narrowing things down here to the ones that truly shaped me.These are games I loved, or that affected me deeply in some way. I figured it would be better than including ever Zelda game for example. I am a massive Legend of Zelda fan and have enjoyed most games in the series, but only 2 or 3 of the games really impacted me.
I also collect otome games, so I’ve included a shrine to one of my favourite genres.
I've broken it down into different sections, and just know it kills me to use the word "Retro" to describe my childhood games lol.
You may notice that after a point I don't really play 3D games anymore. As the graphics of video games have improved, my health has declined. Many of the more modern day games, like Balders Gate 3 or the Breath of the Wild make me hugely motion sick. So I am unable to play them. Which is soul crushing as a gamer. Thankfully, I don't lack other things to play, but it does hurt knowing I can't move forward with people to the future of gaming.
You also may notice that I am primarily a Nintendo gamer, but I skipped the Wii and Wii U entirely. While I had the Wii and the Wii U, I found that motion controls didn't mesh well with my disability. So many of the games were frustrating for me. I'm looking at you Skyward Sword!
These days I only really play on Handheld, whether that be my Switch, Steamdeck or my Andriod Phone.
I leave all the PS5 and Xbox Series S gaming to my husband.
All this talk about Retro consoles reminds me of when me and my Husband were shopping in Game: the hugely imaginatively named Video Game store franchise in the UK. We were talking to the lady on the till, discussing the current scope of videogames when she suddenly goes “Hey, do you remember that really old console The Gamecube?”
Whelp, guess we old now.
I was in the middle of my teens when the Gamecube came out. It was my favourite console growing up and it was only when the Nintendo Switch game came out that it was knocked off of it’s top spot.
Anyway, I’ve pretty much played on all the Early consoles. The only upside to being nearly 40 I guess. Although I never did play on the Atari. I have be told by my Mum the family did have one before I was born. No idea what happened to it though.
One thing I love about the older consoles was how tactile it was inserting games. Especially on the Nes. Open the lid, slide the game in and push down with a click like in a VHS player. I think the physical feel of gaming has definitely lessened over time, especially with modern disc trays.
I loved the Gamecube too. It was satisfying popping up the lid and putting in the cute little disks. I think I just loved everything about the Gamecube. In fact as far as I am concerned we peaked at the Gamecube with console design and have been going backwards since.
I think it encapsulated everything that made the 2000s great. That fun colour and interesting shape. The handle on the back and best of all you could get a gameboy player for the bottom of it. I should probably move on or this will just end up being a page of me waxing lyrical about why I love the Gamecube and not actually talking about games.
Anyway, please pick a tab to explore my games.
