The Anime and Manga that shaped me

So as I mentioned in my about section. I got into Anime in the Early 90s along with my older brother.
Back in the 90s there was not a huge selection on VHS and the ones that were available were usually seinen and also really violent. I often wonder if this is where my love of horror and darker media came from.

Much like my Video game sections, the following pages list the media that had an effect on me rather than being my all time favourites. Obviously I'll be listing my favourites too (It's the Vision of Escaflowne in case you are wondering), but I wanted to include the mid tier animes that left their mark on me too.

It's strange looking back at the older Anime and Manga. I'd like to say that I viewed them through rose tinted glasses, but I genuinely think Anime was better in the earlier days.
That's of course not to say there aren't some brilliant modern day ones, or that there weren't awful ones in the 80s and 90s.
But I think the writers and producers were more likely to take risks and create the animes they wanted to make.. rather than the trend of today where companies follow the money. The market is very saturated with so many these days, and what's with all the weird names?

So one of the interesting things about the early days of Anime, outside of Japan at least, was the culture of Fansubs.
Since a lot of anime was not officially distributed it could be very difficult to get a copy of a specific anime let alone understand it. This is where different Anime groups and Fan clubs would work together to create Subtitles and distribute them on VHS. Of course there was an expectation that if something got an official release to go and purchase it.
The idea was basically to prove that there was a market outside of Japan for Anime. It took awhile, but here we are 30 years later and Anime is so mainstream you can buy Demon Slayer Merchandise in SuperMarkets. I think we should all take a moment to appreciate the original Fansubbers for paving the way for Modern fans.

Also if you've ever found yourself thinking "Aren't you too old for Anime or Cosplay?" Knock that shit off. The older fans are the ones who built the foundations of your fandoms today.

I'm sure ill add some more rambling thoughts to this as they come to me. In the meantime, please check out my Anime and my Manga sections. I have listed (or will be) listing some quite obscure ones, so if you are looking for hidden gems please have a peek.
